Term 4, Week 6 2022
This week's cover photo shows our students at the Children's University Graduation, held Wednesday 16th November at Bonython Hall.
Dear Community Members
Welcome to Week 6!
Term 4 is certainly in full flight with many end of year events soon to be upon us. I look forward to seeing many of you at our Christmas Concert next Wednesday evening.
Our 2023 Reception Transition program is well underway and we welcomed 31 new Reception students to our school this morning. We welcome these students and their families to our community and wish then all the best for their commencement in Term 1 2023.
I am delighted to let you know that our stage 2 Building Project has been approved and the planning and design phase now begins. Once again!
The Government Capital Grants allocation were approved at the South Australian Commission for Catholic Schools meeting on September 27.
The South Australian Commission for Catholic School (SACCS) received 26 applications requesting grants of $49,427,490 towards projects with a value of just over $125m.
The total funds available from both the state and commonwealth governments were $13,374,049, which was a reduction of almost $5m from the previous year due to the state government withdrawing its supplementary funding which had been in place for the previous 2 years.
Dominican School has been allocated a grant of $1 million towards our Stage 2 project and it has also been approved that we can undertake $3 million build / refurbishment upstairs with the support of the Catholic Education Office- ($2 million).
This is amazing for our school community in so many ways and such great support from the Commission and Catholic Education SA. They believe in us!
So…here we go…consultation and design phases now begin and vital conversations start taking place, with the hope that we commence building around July/August 2023.
There are still lots of decisions to be made and I will keep you up to date as much as I possibly can as we enter another exciting time for our Dominican School community.
Have a great week!
Kind regards
Phil

We wait in joyful HOPE for the coming of CHRIST, the Light of the World
We will soon be coming into the Church Season of ADVENT. The word Advent means ‘to come’ and during this time we prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus at Christmas.
The duration of this season is four weeks and begins on Sunday November 27. At Dominican School, it has been our tradition to begin Advent early so that we experience the full cycle. Our theme for Advent this year is LIGHT, which centres on Christ as the Light of the World. During Advent, we prepare for the coming of Christ, and as followers of Jesus, we are all called to shine God’s Light of Hope and Love on Earth.
We will mark the beginning of our Advent journey with community prayer as part of our whole school assembly this Friday November 25.
Jesus said, ‘You are the light of the world... let your light shine for everyone.’ Mt 5:14-16
One of the ways we can be a sign of the light of Christ in our world is by supporting those in need in our local community. Each year at Dominican, we commit to helping those less fortunate by providing donations for Christmas Hampers to support the VINNIES CHRISTMAS APPEAL.
We will have a Giving Tree in the Front Office and a Christmas box in each classroom for the collection of goods. We invite all students to contribute an item so that together we can bring some comfort and cheer to the needy this festive season. Such items might include: packaged foods such as pasta, noodles, and biscuits; tinned foods such as vegetables, soups, baked beans, and spaghetti; Christmas items such as bonbons, decorations, puddings, and tinned hams; long life products such as tea, coffee, milo, milk, juice, jam, and honey; and small gift items such as puzzles, books, stationery, and toiletries. We will be collecting donations until Week 9 Monday December 12.
Our Dominican community is always very generous in giving at this time, and we thank you in advance for your support.

Earlier this term the 3/4 classes went to the Art Gallery of South Australia to learn about and explore Aboriginal Art. We then had Artist Greer Tappert lead us in a studio session where we created paintings of our journeys by incorporating nature and scenes in our life from a bird’s eye view.
“The Aboriginal paintings and Artwork at the gallery were good. They were very unique and had different styles. We also liked the craft activity at the Gallery. It was really fun when Greer came in. She was very artistic, and helped us with texture and to improve our artworks”

Sports Presentation Assembly
On Friday of Week 4 we celebrated and thanked all those that participated in the after school sport program in 2022 with a whole school sport presentation assembly. Congratulations to all the students on their dedication and commitment to the program. They consistently showed great sportsmanship and were resilient in their approach towards weekly games. The student’s growth, in both skills and game strategies, throughout the season is to be commended.
Our teams would not be viable without the support of coaches, team managers, scorers and supporters to cheer them on. We thank all of these people who generously gave of their time, energy and expertise. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Nick Gargula, our Dominican soccer delegate for 2022.
PE Week
In Week 5 we celebrated Physical Education Week. This event promotes active and healthy living for all Australians through education and professional practice.
At Dominican, we had a variety of fun fitness activities throughout the week, students received their Premier’s Be Active Challenge medals, and we had the Port Adelaide Football Club run a whole school assembly focusing on healthy lifestyles.
SACPSSA Athletics Carnival
On Wednesday 23rd November, we had 35 students from Year 3-6 attend the SACPSSA Catholic Schools Athletics Carnival at Bridgestone Stadium, Salisbury. The enthusiasm and participation from our students was outstanding. Their behaviour was exemplary and they continuously showed great sportsmanship. Well done to all the students on their fantastic effort. A special mention goes to our Year 6 girls for being overall winners on the day! Many thanks to our parent volunteers that gave up their time to assist with duties at the carnival. Your efforts were a valuable contribution to the success of the day. Thank you!
Congratulations Caitlin
We congratulate Caitlin who attended Track and Field National Championships in Brisbane last week. Caitlin came 2nd place in Shot Put and 8th in Discus. Well done, Caitlin!
