Term 2, Week 4 2022
Dear Community Members
This week I had the privilege to gather with over 50 Catholic School Leaders from around Australia in Brisbane. The focus of the three days was ‘Leading with Integrity for Excellence’- Governance for Catholic Schools. There is always a sense of great energy and commitment when leaders come together to discuss the purpose of Catholic Education and where we sit within this. I believe that Catholic Education strives to achieve a meaningful and flourishing life and is at the core of who we should be so that we can be the best version of ourselves. I would like to thank Alison and Nick for their excellent leadership in my absence and for all the staff here at Dominican who collaborate so well together to ensure we continue to be the best we can be.
The building project continues to make good progress and the builders are committed to ensuring that they make up as much time as they can so that classrooms are ready for our new Receptions in Term 3. I look forward to showing our staff and parents through this week.
At the end of each day the pick up area on Dunn Street is becoming more and more congested and I am extremely concerned about the safety of our community. Can I please ask the following;
- Please come into the school grounds rather than stand out on the narrow footpath- from Monday it won’t be compulsory to wear masks. This will reduce congestion on the footpath area where students are exiting on bikes, scooters or walking home. Please do not stand in the gutter or on the road.
- Please DO NOT leave your vehicle if you are ranking on Dunn Street from Military Road up until the large double gates. This is strictly a NO PARKING ZONE. You are able to park your car further up Dunn Street. Please read signs carefully. We are trying to achieve a smooth flow of traffic along Dunn Street.
- If you decide to stand on the footpath on the other side of Dunn Street then please cross the road to collect your child. No child should be crossing the road unaccompanied. It would be preferable that if you have your dog with you, please stay on the other side of the road. Dogs are not permitted to enter the school yard or to be at the entrance/exit area.
- Please communicate this to Grand Parents or other family members who will be doing the Pick Up in the afternoons.
- Please note that there will always be a staff member most probably myself, Alison or Nick on duty until 3:30pm each day
I thank you for your anticipated cooperation with this important matter.
Have a great week!
Kind regards,
Phil Holmes

This week is Laudato Si Week which marks the 7th anniversary of our Pope’s encyclical on the CARE OF OUR COMMON HOME. As we celebrate this important week, we are reminded of our commitment to ecological conversion and the call to be stewards of God’s gift of creation. At Dominican, we work in partnership to care for our school environment by actively engaging in… nude food lunchboxes, class indoor and outdoor environmental responsibilities, composting of food scraps, looking after our school gardens, Friday whole school clean ups, and caring for our local Sand Dunes. We give thanks for the beauty of God’s creation and we look forward to continuing to work together to care for it.
The year 1/2 students are learning about Australian money. We started the unit with a brainstorm of what we know about money, what money is used for and created a 'Word Wall'. The students are participating in hands on activities to explore and identify money, making amounts of money and counting money. Students are provided with the opportunity to share their ideas and investigations with their peers.

Thank you to all the students and families that joined us for National Walk Safely to School Day. It was wonderful to see over 60% of our students walking or scooting to school. It was a perfect way to start the morning, which was topped off with a yummy breakfast prepared by our parent volunteers in Breakfast Club.
This important initiative aims to raise awareness of the health, road safety, transport and environmental benefits that regular walking (especially to and from school) can provide for the long term well-being of our children. It would be great to see families continue this and walk to school together on a daily basis.
